How it's calculated

Bürgergeld = standard rate + rent and heating − (net income − allowance)

  1. StepEnter how many adults and children belong to the household (Bedarfsgemeinschaft).
  2. StepCheck the standard rates: 2026 gives 563 € single, 506 € per partner, 357/390/471 € per child.
  3. StepEnter rent and heating as far as the Jobcenter recognises them as reasonable.
  4. StepEnter gross and net pay — the allowance tapers on gross, the deduction comes off net.
  5. ResultThe result is the monthly entitlement; only the Jobcenter's decision is binding.

What this number means

Bürgergeld is Germany's basic income support for people able to work, and the entitlement is a difference. On one side sits the need: the standard rate under § 20 SGB II plus the actual cost of accommodation and heating under § 22 SGB II, recognised in full so long as the local authority deems it reasonable. Which standard rate applies follows a person's place in the household, not age alone: 563 euro for a single adult, 506 euro for each of two partners, and 357, 390 or 471 euro per child by age band. Those figures are input fields here because they are re-set every year. For 1 January 2026 they did not move — the indexation formula produced lower figures, so the 2025 amounts continue to apply. On the other side sits income, and not all of it counts. Under § 11b SGB II the first 100 euro is disregarded, and above that a tapered share of gross pay: 20 percent between 100 and 520 euro, 30 percent to 1,000 euro, 10 percent to 1,200 euro, or to 1,500 euro where a minor child is in the household. The taper runs on gross pay while the deduction comes off net pay, which is why both are asked for. Additional needs, child benefit, maintenance, assets and sanctions are not modelled. Only the Jobcenter's decision is binding.

For beneficiaries capable of work who are in employment, a total of 100 euro per month is to be deducted from the income from employment, in place of the amounts under subsection 1 sentence 1 numbers 3 to 5.
§ 11b(2) sentence 1 SGB II, own translation

No increase for 2026

The standard rates do not rise on 1 January 2026. The indexation formula produced lower figures, so under § 28a(5) SGB XII the 2025 amounts stay in force. Level 1 remains 563 euro.

Reasonable, not merely actual

§ 22 SGB II covers accommodation and heating at their actual cost, but only so far as that cost is reasonable. Each municipality sets its own ceiling, and above it the Jobcenter recognises only the reasonable share once the first-year grace period ends.

Taper on gross, deduction from net

The percentage bands of § 11b(3) run on gross pay while the allowance is subtracted from net pay. Without a minor child at most 348 euro stays free; with one it reaches 378 euro.

Commonly misread

Two adults get 563 euro each as their standard rate.

Level 1 applies only to someone running a household alone. Two adult partners in one Bedarfsgemeinschaft fall under level 2 and get 506 euro each.

Above 100 euro every euro earned is counted in full.

Above the basic disregard a tapered share stays free under § 11b(3) SGB II. That is 20 percent between 100 and 520 euro, 30 percent to 1,000 euro and 10 percent to 1,200 euro.

Child benefit and additional needs are inside this figure.

The calculator knows only earned income and the standard rates. Child benefit, maintenance, additional needs under § 21, assets and sanctions all shift the entitlement and are not modelled here.

Questions

How much Bürgergeld is payable in 2026?

The standard rate plus rent and heating, less countable income. A single adult has a standard rate of 563 euro; with 550 euro of recognised rent and no income that comes to 1,113 euro a month.

Did the German standard rate rise in 2026?

No, the standard rates are unchanged from 1 January 2026. The indexation under § 28a SGB XII would have produced lower figures, so the 2025 amounts continue to apply. Level 1 stays at 563 euro.

How much can you earn on top of Bürgergeld?

The first 100 euro is disregarded, then 20 percent of gross between 100 and 520 euro, 30 percent to 1,000 euro and 10 percent to 1,200 euro. At 900 euro gross that totals 298 euro. With a minor child in the household the last band runs to 1,500 euro.

How much rent does the Jobcenter pay?

The actual cost of accommodation and heating, so far as it is reasonable (§ 22(1) SGB II). Each municipality decides what counts as reasonable. During the first-year grace period the rent is recognised regardless.

Which standard rate applies to a child?

Level 6 at 357 euro up to the sixth birthday, level 5 at 390 euro from 6 to 13, and level 4 at 471 euro from 14 to 17. Enter the matching amount in the per-child field.

What does this calculator leave out?

Additional needs under § 21, child benefit and maintenance, assets, sanctions, and education and participation benefits. The allowance here also covers one earner rather than several. The Jobcenter's decision is the binding one.
