Weapon Strength Calculator
Calculate the exact Strength stat your character needs to wield any weapon without Combat Speed penalties in Kenshi
Kenshi Strength Requirement Overview
Your combat effectiveness starts here
Don't let weapon strength requirements make a legendary weapon become a burden. In Kenshi, failing to meet the Weapon Strength requirement slashes your combat speed, leaving your warrior vulnerable. This Kenshi Weapon Strength calculator helps you find the exact threshold to maintain peak performance without penalties.
Quick Answer: Your Strength must be at least 40 times the weapon's Blunt Damage (or equal to its weight for cut-only weapons).
Core Formula
Required Strength = Blunt Damage × 40 — for weapons with Blunt Damage. For cut-only weapons (katanas, nodachis), the requirement equals the weapon's weight.
Combat Speed Penalty
Wielding a weapon without the requirement can reduce attack speed by up to -47.5%.
Few things are more frustrating in Kenshi than watching your elite warrior die because they're swinging a Meitou Fragment Axe like it's made of lead. In Kenshi, every melee weapon has a minimum Strength requirement. When your character's Strength falls below this threshold, they suffer a severe Combat Speed penalty that makes attacks painfully slow and leaves them vulnerable.
Quick Answer: Required Strength = MAX(Blunt Damage × 40, Weapon Weight). For most weapons with Blunt Damage, the blunt-based calculation dominates. For cut-only weapons like katanas, the requirement equals the weapon's weight instead.
Understanding this mechanic is crucial for character progression, squad building, and combat effectiveness. The difference between meeting the Kenshi Weapon Strength requirement and falling short can mean life or death in Kenshi's unforgiving landscape.
Note: Meeting the Strength requirement only removes the penalty. To actually swing faster than the baseline speed, you need to train Dexterity — Strength determines whether you can wield a weapon effectively, while Dexterity determines how quickly you attack with it.
The full formula for weapon Strength requirements is:
For most weapons with meaningful Blunt Damage, the Blunt Damage × 40 portion
is larger. For cut-only weapons (katanas, nodachis) that have 0 Blunt
Damage, the Strength requirement equals the weapon's weight — typically quite
low.
This calculator implements the full formula. If you are using a cut-only weapon with 0 Blunt Damage, simply enter the weapon's weight to get the correct requirement.
The multiplier of 40 was determined through community reverse-engineering of
Kenshi's combat system using the Forgotten Construction Set (FCS). The game
internally checks characterStrength >= MAX(bluntDamage × 40, weaponWeight)
before applying speed modifiers.
Practical Examples
Hacker (Standard) with 1.00 Blunt Damage:
Falling Sun (Meitou) with 2.00 Blunt Damage:
Fragment Axe (Meitou) with 3.60 Blunt Damage:
Blunt Damage is one of two damage types in Kenshi (the other being Cut Damage). You can find a weapon's Blunt Damage value by:
- Hovering over the weapon in your inventory
- Examining weapons in shops or on the ground
- Checking the weapon stats panel
The Blunt Damage value varies based on:
- Weapon type — Heavy weapons have higher Blunt Damage
- Weapon quality — Catun, Mk II, Edge Type 3, and Meitou grades affect stats
- Material — Different materials provide different stat bonuses
Important: Some weapon classes like katanas and nodachis have 0 Blunt Damage — they deal only Cut Damage. For these weapons, the Strength requirement is based on weapon weight.
Wielding a weapon with insufficient Strength causes severe penalties. Your character will experience the following drawbacks:
- Dramatically slower attack speed — Swings take significantly longer to complete
- Increased recovery time — The pause between attacks extends substantially
- Vulnerability window — Enemies can easily counterattack during slow animations
The penalty scales with how far below the requirement your Strength falls:
- 20+ stat points below: -47.5% Combat Speed (maximum penalty)
- 15 stat points below: approximately -37.5%
- 7 stat points below: approximately -17.5%
- At or above requirement: No penalty
The Volatility of Strength
Remember that your Current Strength is what matters, not just your base stat. In Kenshi, Strength is volatile:
- Injuries: Damage to the Chest, Stomach, or Arms reduces your effective Strength.
- Hunger: Severe hunger imposes a massive stat penalty.
Warning: If you barely meet the Strength requirement (e.g., 80 Strength for an 80 requirement weapon), a single hit to your stomach during combat can drop your Strength below the threshold. Suddenly, your attacks will become slow, leading to a "death spiral" where you can't block or attack effectively. Aim for a safety buffer of 5-10 Strength above the requirement.
Understanding exact Strength requirements for commonly used weapons helps you plan character progression. All values below are verified from game data via the Forgotten Construction Set (FCS).
Katanas and Nodachis (Cut-Only Weapons)
Katanas and nodachis have 0 Blunt Damage — they are pure cutting weapons. Their Strength requirement is based on weapon weight, which is typically very low (4–10 kg depending on quality). This makes them ideal for characters with low Strength who want to remain effective in combat.
Sabres (The Balanced Fighter)
| Weapon | Quality | Blunt Damage | Required Strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sabre | Standard | 0.40 | 16 |
| Heavy Sabre | Standard | 0.80 | 32 |
| Desert Sabre | Mk II | 0.60 | 24 |
Sabre Advantage: Sabres provide a middle ground between katanas and heavier weapons. The Heavy Sabre offers excellent damage without prohibitive Strength requirements.
Hackers and Cleavers (The Brutal Approach)
| Weapon | Quality | Blunt Damage | Required Strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hacker | Standard | 1.00 | 40 |
| Paladin's Cross | Meitou | 1.60 | 64 |
| Heavy Cleaver | Standard | 1.50 | 60 |
| Meat Cleaver | Edge Type 3 | 0.60 | 24 |
When to Choose Hackers: These weapons excel against heavily armored opponents. The higher Blunt Damage helps overcome armor bonuses that might nullify Cut Damage.
Paladin's Cross Note
The Paladin's Cross is classified as a Hacker, not a Heavy Weapon. Its Meitou version deals 50% bonus damage against robots/skeletons, making it excellent for Ashlands expeditions. It requires only 64 Strength — much less than heavy weapons.
Heavy Weapons (Maximum Devastation)
| Weapon | Quality | Blunt Damage | Required Strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fragment Axe | Meitou | 3.60 | 144 |
| Falling Sun | Meitou | 2.00 | 80 |
| Plank | Standard | 1.50 | 60 |
Heavy Weapon Strategy: The Meitou Fragment Axe is the most demanding weapon in Kenshi at 144 Strength — you'll need Industrial Lifter Arms on a Skeleton to realistically reach this. The Falling Sun is the lightest heavy weapon and uniquely favors Cut Damage over Blunt.
Weapon stats are based on Kenshi v1.0 stable, verified via the Forgotten Construction Set (FCS). You can verify exact values using the FCS editor included with the game.
Weapon quality in Kenshi follows a progression that directly impacts Strength requirements:
Quality Progression (Lowest to Highest)
- Rusted — Significantly reduced stats
- Old — Slightly below standard
- Standard/Refitted — Baseline stats
- Catun No. 1/2/3 — Improved stats
- Mk I/II/III — Further improvements
- Edge Type 1/2/3 — High-quality tier
- Meitou — Legendary quality, best stats
Higher quality weapons typically have increased Blunt Damage, which raises the Strength requirement.
The Quality Trap
New players often equip the highest quality weapon they find without checking requirements. A character wielding a Meitou weapon with insufficient Strength will perform worse than with a Standard quality weapon they can handle. Always calculate requirements before equipping upgrades.
Different races in Kenshi have varying Strength multipliers. These differences affect which weapons they can use effectively. Here is how it works:
Humans and Shek
- Standard Strength progression
- Can eventually wield any weapon with training
- Shek naturally gravitate toward heavy weapons due to combat bonuses
Hivers
- Soldier Drones: Standard Strength capability
- Worker Drones: Lower Strength ceiling, stick to lighter weapons
- Princes: Lower combat stats, best with katanas and light sabres
Skeletons
- Industrial Lifter Arms: Boost effective Strength significantly
- Economy Limbs: May reduce Strength
- Masterwork Limbs: Optimal Strength bonuses
Limb Replacement Strategy: Skeleton limb replacements modify your character's effective Strength stat directly — the modified value is what you see in your character stats and what the formula uses. Check your character panel after limb changes to recalculate weapon requirements.
Since Strength requirements can be quite high (up to 144 for the Meitou Fragment Axe), efficient training is essential:
Carrying Heavy Loads
Strength increases passively when you travel while encumbered. Every 1% encumbrance grants 1% Strength XP while walking. At 70%+ encumbrance, you gain up to 25% bonus XP.
Effective methods:
- Carrying unconscious bodies — Grants a separate +25% XP bonus that stacks with encumbrance, for a maximum 50% XP gain rate
- Filling inventory with ore, iron plates, or building materials
- Hauling items between locations
Pro Tip: Place a filled backpack inside your main inventory instead of equipping it. This bypasses the backpack's weight reduction effect, applying the full load for maximum XP gain.
Training Dummies
Some buildings contain Strength training equipment. While less efficient than carrying heavy loads, they provide a safe training environment.
Combat Training
Fighting also trains Strength based on encumbrance — every 1% encumbrance grants 1% Strength XP per hit.

This calculator works both ways:
Finding Required Strength: If you have a weapon with known Blunt Damage, enter it to find the Strength needed.
Finding Maximum Weapon Blunt Damage: If you know your character's Strength, you can determine the maximum Blunt Damage weapon they can wield effectively by dividing Strength by 40.
Example: A character with 50 Strength can wield weapons up to 1.25 Blunt Damage without penalty (50 ÷ 40 = 1.25).
Early Game
Start with lighter weapons that match your low Strength. Katanas are excellent early-game choices since they require very little Strength (based on weight only).
Mid Game
As your Strength increases, transition to sabres and hackers. Watch for quality upgrades that may change Strength requirements.
Late Game
With high Kenshi Weapon Strength, heavy weapons become viable. The Falling Sun (80 Str) is more accessible than the Fragment Axe (144 Str for Meitou).
Squad Building
Consider varied Strength levels when equipping your squad. Not every character needs heavy weapons — a mix of weapon types can be strategically advantageous.
This calculator relies on the verified formula MAX(Blunt Damage × 40, Weapon Weight) derived from the game's code.
Important Notes:
- Modded Games: If you are using mods that alter combat mechanics or weapon stats (like "Sensible Blood Spider Range" or overhaul mods), these values might differ.
- Game Version: Calculations are accurate for the latest stable Kenshi release (v1.0.55+).
- Effective Strength: Remember that injuries, hunger, and robotic limbs affect your current effective Strength. Always calculate based on your current status panel number, not your base stat.
The Bottom Line
Required Strength = Blunt Damage × 40 (or weapon weight for cut-only weapons). Know the number, match your Strength, and you'll never suffer the Combat Speed penalty again.
