What is DPS?
Damage per second, the great equalizer
DPS — damage per second — is the steady rate at which a weapon, ability, or build deals damage, and the DPS calculator turns two stats into that single comparable number. A weapon that hits for a lot but swings slowly and one that hits for less but swings quickly can be hard to rank by eye; DPS settles it by multiplying the damage of one hit by how many hits land each second. It is the number behind every "best weapon" tier list, every build comparison, and every theorycrafting spreadsheet, and it lets you weigh a heavy, deliberate hitter against a fast, flurrying one on equal terms.

Damage per second is simply the damage of one hit multiplied by how many hits land each second.
DPS = damage per hit × attacks per secondBoth stats matter in direct proportion: raise either the damage per hit or the attack speed by a fifth and the DPS rises by a fifth. That is why attack-speed buffs and flat damage bonuses can be compared on the same footing once you express them as DPS.
Suppose a weapon deals 150 damage per hit at an attack speed of 1.6 attacks per second.
Read the two stats
Damage per hit is 150 and attack speed is 1.6 attacks per second.
Multiply them together
150 × 1.6 — the per-hit damage scaled by how often it lands.

150 × 1.6 = 240 DPS — the steady damage output of this weapon.
DPS is a comparison tool, so its real power shows when you put two builds side by side. A weapon at 150 damage and 1.6 attacks per second lands at 240 DPS; a slower hitter dealing 300 per hit at 0.7 attacks per second comes in at only 210 DPS, so the faster weapon wins despite its smaller numbers — higher attack speed multiplies your damage just as surely as a bigger hit does. Because the formula is a straight multiplication, you can chase whichever stat is cheaper to gain: a 20% attack-speed roll and a 20% damage roll are worth exactly the same DPS, but the attack-speed roll also stacks more on-hit effects and triggers more critical-hit rolls, while the damage roll benefits more from percentage hit-damage bonuses. Use DPS to rank weapons and builds, then let the rest of your kit break the tie.
The formula is exact, but the number it produces is a ceiling — a few practical points keep it honest.
Base DPS ignores crits, misses, and mitigation
This calculator gives base DPS from damage per hit and attack speed alone. It assumes every hit lands at full value, so it does not account for critical hits, misses, enemy armor and resistances, damage falloff at range, reload or cast wind-up, or ability cooldown ramp. To estimate live damage, enter your average damage per hit (after crits and mitigation) rather than the raw tooltip value, and treat the result as a clean comparison between builds.
