Divide the total price by the quantity in the pack. A 500 g bag costing 4.99 has a unit price of 4.99 ÷ 500 = 0.00998 per gram, or about 1.00 per 100 g.
It is the cost of a single unit of the product — one gram, one millilitre, one sheet, one piece. Because it removes the effect of pack size, it lets you compare products sold in different amounts.
Work out the unit price for each, making sure both use the same unit, then take the smaller number. A 500 g pack at 4.99 beats a 250 g pack at 2.99, even though the smaller pack has the lower price tag.
It is the unit price multiplied by 100 — what 100 units would cost. European shelf labels use it because it reads more easily than a per-gram figure with several leading zeros.
Usually, but not always. A large pack only pays off if you use all of it; one that spoils first costs more in practice. Quality and how much you actually need count alongside the number.
