How do you calculate the volume of a triangular prism?

Work out the triangle's area, base times height divided by two, then multiply by the length. A 6 by 4 triangle 10 long gives 120 cubic units.

Which height does the triangle need?

The perpendicular one — straight from the base to the opposite corner, not along a slanted side. For a right-angled triangle it is simply the upright leg.

Does it work for any triangle?

Yes, as long as both ends are the same triangle and the sides are straight. Base times height over two is the area of every triangle, not just symmetric ones.
