Roman numerals write values with seven letters: I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500) and M (1000). A number is built by working through those values from largest to smallest and writing each symbol as often as it fits. Two thousand is MM, twenty is XX, five is V and one is I, so 2026 is MMXXVI. Near the fours and nines a second rule takes over. Instead of repeating a symbol four times, a smaller symbol is placed in front of a larger one and subtracted: 4 is IV, 9 is IX, 40 is XL, 90 is XC, 400 is CD and 900 is CM. That is why 1994 is MCMXCIV and not MDCCCCLXXXXIIII. Reading works the same way in reverse. Add each symbol from left to right, unless a smaller one sits in front of a larger one, in which case subtract it first: MCMXCIV is 1000 + (1000 − 100) + (100 − 10) + (5 − 1) = 1994. Two rules keep the form standard. No symbol is repeated more than three times in a row, and only I, X and C are ever used subtractively, each only before the next two larger symbols — so 49 is XLIX, never IL. Those rules are also where the range comes from: MMM (3000) plus CMXCIX (999) is the largest number the standard notation can write, and there is no symbol for zero, for fractions or for negative values.

I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500 and M = 1000. Every Roman numeral is built from these letters, written from the largest value to the smallest and added together, with the subtractive rule for fours and nines.
