MMXXVI

Result: MMXXVI

Work through the symbol values from largest to smallest: 2026 is MM (2000) + XX (20) + V (5) + I (1), so MMXXVI. Near the fours and nines a smaller symbol goes in front of a larger one and is subtracted, which makes 4 into IV and 1994 into MCMXCIV.

What this number means

Roman numerals write values with seven letters: I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500) and M (1000). A number is built by working through those values from largest to smallest and writing each symbol as often as it fits. Two thousand is MM, twenty is XX, five is V and one is I, so 2026 is MMXXVI. Near the fours and nines a second rule takes over. Instead of repeating a symbol four times, a smaller symbol is placed in front of a larger one and subtracted: 4 is IV, 9 is IX, 40 is XL, 90 is XC, 400 is CD and 900 is CM. That is why 1994 is MCMXCIV and not MDCCCCLXXXXIIII. Reading works the same way in reverse. Add each symbol from left to right, unless a smaller one sits in front of a larger one, in which case subtract it first: MCMXCIV is 1000 + (1000 − 100) + (100 − 10) + (5 − 1) = 1994. Two rules keep the form standard. No symbol is repeated more than three times in a row, and only I, X and C are ever used subtractively, each only before the next two larger symbols — so 49 is XLIX, never IL. Those rules are also where the range comes from: MMM (3000) plus CMXCIX (999) is the largest number the standard notation can write, and there is no symbol for zero, for fractions or for negative values.

Split the number before you write it

Break it into thousands, hundreds, tens and units and convert each part on its own. 1994 becomes 1000, 900, 90 and 4, which is M, CM, XC and IV.

Only I, X and C subtract

Each one may stand only before the next two larger symbols: I before V and X, X before L and C, C before D and M. That is why 49 is XLIX and not IL.

No zero, and nothing above 3999

The system has no symbol for zero, fractions or negative numbers. Values from 4000 up need a bar over a symbol to multiply it by 1000, which is not everyday notation.

Historic inscriptions differ

Older stonework sometimes writes 4 as IIII, and clock faces still do. This converter returns the modern standard form throughout.

Commonly misread

4 is IIII and 9 is VIIII, one stroke per unit.

Standard notation subtracts instead: 4 is IV and 9 is IX. A symbol is never repeated four times in a row.

49 can be shortened to IL, one before fifty.

Only I, X and C subtract, and only before the next two larger symbols. 49 is XL plus IX, so XLIX.

MCMXCIV must be read from the biggest symbol outwards.

Read strictly left to right, adding as you go and subtracting whenever a smaller symbol precedes a larger one.

Questions

How do I write a number as a Roman numeral?

Break the number into thousands, hundreds, tens and units, then write each part with M, D, C, L, X, V and I, largest first. For example 2026 is MM (2000) + XX (20) + V (5) + I (1) = MMXXVI.

What are the seven Roman numeral symbols?

I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500 and M = 1000. Every Roman numeral is built from these letters, written from the largest value to the smallest and added together, with the subtractive rule for fours and nines.

What is the subtractive rule (IV, IX, XL)?

When a smaller symbol is placed before a larger one, its value is subtracted: IV is 5 − 1 = 4 and IX is 10 − 1 = 9. The same pattern gives XL (40), XC (90), CD (400) and CM (900), so 4 is IV rather than IIII.

Why does the converter stop at 3999?

M (1000) is the largest single symbol and no symbol is repeated more than three times, so MMM plus CMXCIX gives 3999 as the largest writable value. Numbers from 4000 up need a bar over a symbol to multiply it by 1000, which is not part of everyday usage.

Is there a Roman numeral for zero?

No. The Roman system has no symbol for zero and no way to write fractions or negative numbers, which is why the input starts at 1. Zero as a digit came later, with the Hindu-Arabic system we use today.
