Rectangular Prism Volume Calculator

Result

24.00units³

Result: 24.00 units³

Length times width times height. The order does not matter, so a box on its side holds the same. Watch the surface column in the table: a flat 10 × 5 × 2 box holds the same 100 as a cube-ish shape would, but needs far more material.

Questions

How do you calculate the volume of a box?

Multiply length, width and height. A box 4 by 3 by 2 holds 24 cubic units.

Does it matter which edge I call the length?

No. Multiplication does not care about order, so tipping the box over does not change what it holds.

How many litres is that?

Measure in centimetres and divide the result by 1000. A box 40 × 30 × 20 cm holds 24 000 cm³, so 24 litres.

Which box shape uses the least cardboard?

The cube. Compare the table: 2 × 2 × 2 holds 8 with 24 of surface, while 10 × 5 × 2 holds 100 with 160 — proportionally much more material.
