The Nether is a compressed copy of the Overworld: one block of horizontal travel down there covers eight blocks up here. That single ratio is the whole calculation. Divide your Overworld X by 8, then divide your Overworld Z by 8, and you have the spot where the linked portal belongs. 800 becomes 100, 1600 becomes 200, and negatives behave no differently — −800 becomes −100. Only the horizontal axes are scaled, which is why there is no height field on this page at all: Y carries across untouched. What the ratio does not promise is that your two portals will pair up. Step through and the game hunts for an existing portal near the converted coordinates — roughly 16 blocks out on the way in, 128 blocks out on the way back — and if it finds none, it digs a fresh one at a place of its own choosing. That is the usual story behind a carefully planned link that misbehaves: the arithmetic was right and the build was too far off. Rounding is rarely the culprit, since a whole block sits deep inside that search radius. 825.5 divided by 8 is 103.1875, and building at 103 links just as reliably. The payoff is distance: a thousand blocks of tunnel stand in for eight thousand blocks overland.
