Questions

Why does a 100 Mbit/s line only download at 12.5 MB/s?

Because one byte is 8 bits. Plans are sold in megabits per second, while browsers and file managers report megabytes per second, so you divide by 8: 100 ÷ 8 = 12.5. It is not a fault, it is the units.

What is the difference between Mbit/s and MB/s?

Mbit/s is megabits per second and MB/s is megabytes per second, and a byte holds 8 bits. So 1 MB/s equals 8 Mbit/s. The lowercase b means bit and the uppercase B means byte — one small letter, an eightfold difference.

Does this converter use 1000 or 1024 per step?
