In the decimal system 1 GB is exactly 1000 MB, because a gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes and a megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes.
A megabyte (MB) is 1,000,000 bytes, a power of 1000 used by storage makers and the SI standard. A mebibyte (MiB) is 1,048,576 bytes, a power of 1024 used by most operating systems. They differ by about 4.9 % at the mega scale, and the gap widens for larger units.
The drive really holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, which is 1 TB decimal. Your operating system divides by 1024³ and reports 931.32 GiB, usually labelled GB. Nothing shrank — one side counts in 1000s, the other in 1024s.
Eight. That is why a line rated at 100 Mbit/s moves about 12.5 MB per second, which is 100 ÷ 8, and why the lowercase b and the uppercase B are worth reading carefully.
