What this number means
A cubic foot is the volume of a cube one foot on each side. The arithmetic is the easy part; the unit is where it goes wrong. Mixing a length in feet with a height in inches gives a number that looks plausible and is twelve times too large, and the mistake leaves no trace in the result. This page removes the chance to make it: one unit field governs all three edges, the conversion happens before the multiplication, and the answer always lands in cubic feet. One unit, all three edges
The unit field applies to length, width and height together. If you measured a room in feet but its ceiling drop in inches, convert that one figure first — this page cannot mix units within a single box.
Fridges are measured to the liner
Appliance capacity in cubic feet is the usable interior, measured with shelves and drawers removed. Measuring the outside of the cabinet always gives a larger number than the label.
The factors are exact
A foot is 0.3048 metres by definition, so a cubic foot is exactly 0.028 316 846 592 cubic metres and a cubic yard exactly 27 cubic feet. NIST Handbook 44 Appendix C underlines these as exact.
Commonly misread
A cubic yard is three cubic feet.
It is 27, because all three edges triple and the volume goes up by 3 × 3 × 3. The same trap turns a cubic metre into 35.31 cubic feet, not 3.28.
I measured in inches, so I will divide the answer by 12.
Divide by 1 728. Each of the three edges carries a factor of 12, and 12³ is 1 728 — which is why this page converts before multiplying rather than after.
