The Gregorian calendar uses a three-tier rule to determine leap years:
Divisible by 4 = leap year; divisible by 100 = not a leap year; divisible by 400 = leap year againThis means 2024 is a leap year (divisible by 4), 2100 is not (divisible by 100), and 2000 was a leap year (divisible by 400). The extra day is always added on February 29.
The number of working days changes from year to year because the "extra" days beyond 52 complete weeks land on different weekdays. Here are three real examples:

In general, for any standard work schedule (Monday through Friday), you can expect to have about 104 to 106 weekend days. However, this does not account for public holidays, which can significantly increase your total days off. The concept of how many days in year has evolved over centuries. The early Roman calendar only had 304 days divided into 10 months, completely ignoring the winter period! It was later updated to 355 days.
In 45 BCE, Julius Caesar introduced the Julian calendar, which established the 365-day year with a leap year every four years, bringing the average length to 365.25 days. However, because the actual solar year is about 11 minutes shorter than 365.25 days, the calendar drifted out of sync with the seasons by about three days every 400 years.
To fix this, Pope Gregory XIII introduced the Gregorian calendar in 1582. The new system skipped 10 days (October 4 was followed directly by October 15) and refined the leap year rule: years divisible by 100 are not leap years unless they are also divisible by 400.
