What this number means
AP Physics 1 splits its composite exactly down the middle: Section I and Section II are each worth half the exam, so each carries 50 of the 100 points. What makes that symmetry worth a look is that the two halves are built from unequal raw material — 42 multiple-choice questions on one side, 40 free-response points on the other, from four questions worth 10, 12, 10 and 8. Each side is scaled on its own, so a question is worth 50 ÷ 42 ≈ 1.19 composite points while a free-response point is worth 50 ÷ 40 = 1.25. Question 2, translation between representations, is the heaviest single item on the paper: its 12 points are 15 composite points, more than a seventh of the whole exam. Two test cases make the symmetry visible from outside the formula: a flawless multiple-choice section with four blank free-response questions scores 50, and a flawless free-response section with no correct question scores the same 50. Both land on a 3, and neither half alone can do better. The limitation is the cut line. The College Board publishes the 50/50 weighting and the per-question points, but never the composite a 5 requires — not for this exam, not for any exam, in any year. The boundaries used here, 71, 60, 49 and 38, are an estimate and move a few points each year.
