Teacher Part-Time Salary Calculator (Germany)

Result

3,921.57

Result: 3,921.57 €

Cut the teaching hours and the gross pay falls in exactly the same proportion — § 6 BBesG says so in one sentence. Going from 25.5 to 20 hours leaves 78.4 % of the gross, so 5,000 € becomes 3,921.57 €. The net falls less steeply, because income tax is progressive.

  2. StepEnter your current weekly teaching hours and the number you are aiming for.
  3. ResultRead the new gross — the old one times the ratio of the two hour figures.

What this number means

The rule is one sentence of German law

§ 6 (1) BBesG cuts pay in the same proportion as the working time, and the formula on this page is that sentence. Nothing else in the Besoldung changes the ratio.

Gross, not net

The result is the new monthly gross before tax. Net falls by less, because German income tax is progressive, and how much less depends on your tax class, church tax and Familienzuschlag — take the gross to an official Brutto-Netto-Rechner.

A private health premium does not shrink

A PKV premium is a fixed monthly amount and stays at 100 % however few hours you teach. That is why what is left at the end of the month can fall faster than the workload.

German civil-service pay only

The pro-rata rule applies to Beamte under the Bundesbesoldungsgesetz. Outside that system the arithmetic may hold, but the legal basis does not.

Commonly misread

Half the hours means half the take-home pay.

Half the hours halves the gross. Net falls by less, because a smaller gross falls into lower tax brackets.

The result is my new net salary.

It is the new gross, before tax and before any deduction. Feed it into an official Brutto-Netto-Rechner to get the net.

Every cost falls with the hours as well.

The salary does, and so does the substitution threshold. A PKV premium does not — it is a fixed amount and stays at 100 %.

Questions

How is a teacher's part-time salary calculated?

The gross falls in exactly the same proportion as the hours — § 6 (1) BBesG puts it in a single sentence. Twenty hours out of 25.5 leave 78.4 % of the gross, and nothing else in the Besoldung changes that ratio.

Does the net salary drop by the same share?

No, it drops by less, because German income tax is progressive and a smaller gross falls into lower brackets. How much less depends on your tax class, church tax and Familienzuschlag, so this calculator does not guess at it. Take the new gross to an official Brutto-Netto-Rechner.

Do private health insurance premiums fall too?

No. A PKV premium is a fixed monthly amount and stays at 100 % however few hours you teach. That is why the money left over can shrink much faster than the workload.

What happens to the substitution threshold?

It is pro-rated along with the hours: the three unpaid substitution hours per month that apply at full time become 1.5 hours at 50 %. It is the same ratio this calculator applies to the salary.

How does part-time affect the pension?

Pensionable service accrues in proportion to the hours worked. A year at 50 % counts as half a full-time year in the final Ruhegehalt.

Can the school refuse a part-time request?

A discretionary request can be refused for urgent operational reasons, which happens where teachers are scarce. Part-time for family or care reasons is far better protected and is almost never refused once the formal requirements are met.
