How do I calculate surface speed?

Multiply π by the diameter and by the rotational speed: v = π × d × n. Use metres for the diameter and revolutions per minute for the speed to get metres per minute. A 0.1 m part at 1000 rpm reaches about 314.16 m/min.

What is surface speed?

Surface speed — also called cutting speed or rim speed — is how fast a point on the outer edge of a rotating part actually travels. It is the circumference multiplied by the number of turns each minute. It therefore depends on both the diameter and the rotational speed.

What is the difference between surface speed and rpm?

Rpm counts full turns per minute; surface speed measures how far the rim travels in that minute. Two parts at the same rpm can have very different surface speeds, because a larger diameter covers more distance per turn.

My diameter is in millimetres — what do I do?
