Divide the distance by the time: speed = distance ÷ time. With kilometres and hours the answer comes out in km/h. For example, 100 km covered in 2 hours is 100 ÷ 2 = 50 km/h.
It is average speed — total distance divided by total time for the whole trip. It does not capture how fast you were going at any single moment, so stops, acceleration, and traffic are smoothed into one figure. A speedometer shows instantaneous speed instead.
Pace is the inverse of speed: instead of distance per hour it says how many minutes each kilometre takes, pace = 60 ÷ speed. At 50 km/h that is 1.2 min/km. Runners and cyclists prefer pace because it maps directly onto effort over a known distance.
Rearrange the same relationship: distance = speed × time, and time = distance ÷ speed. At 50 km/h for 3 hours you cover 150 km, and 150 km at 50 km/h takes 3 hours. The solve buttons on the distance and time fields do this for you.
Multiply km/h by 0.621 to get miles per hour, or divide by 3.6 to get metres per second. So 50 km/h is about 31.1 mph, or roughly 13.9 m/s.
