Why a smaller number is faster

Pace (min/km, min/mile) is time per distance, while speed (km/h, mph) is distance per time — the two are reciprocals. So a smaller pace number means a faster pace: 4 min/km is faster than 6 min/km. Double the speed and the pace number halves — the pace↔speed conversion follows a hyperbola. Concretely: km/h = 60 ÷ (min/km).

min/km, min/mile, km/h, and mph — the key pace and speed units

min/km is the standard metric running pace (minutes per kilometre); min/mile is the Anglo-American equivalent. Because a mile is 1.609344 km long, the min/mile figure is about 61% larger than the min/km figure for the same pace. km/h and mph are the matching speeds — higher is faster — with mph = km/h ÷ 1.609344. This tool shows pace as decimal minutes: 5.5 min/km means 5 minutes and 30 seconds.

Because pace and speed are reciprocals, you can never turn one into the other with a fixed multiplier — you always divide by the value. For more pairs, use our running pace conversion hub.

Where pace conversions are used

Pace conversions are a runner's and cyclist's staple — minutes per kilometre, minutes per mile, and the speeds that match them.

  • Pace is the inverse of speed: a faster runner has a lower minutes-per-kilometre number.
  • A 5:00 min/km pace equals 12 km/h; a 4:00 min/km pace equals 15 km/h.
  • A sub-4-hour marathon needs an average pace of about 5:41 min/km.

Frequently asked questions

What is 1 min/km in mph?

1 min/km equals 37.28 mph.

How much is 5 min/km in mph?

5 min/km equals 7.46 mph.

Why is a smaller pace faster?

Pace (min/km or min/mile) is time per distance, while speed (km/h, mph) is distance per time — they are reciprocals. So a smaller pace number means a faster pace: 4 min/km is faster than 6 min/km. Double the speed and the pace number halves. Concretely: km/h = 60 ÷ (min/km).

How do min/km and min/mile differ?

A mile is 1.609344 km long — longer than a kilometre. For the same speed, the min/mile figure is therefore about 61% larger than the min/km figure: 5 min/km is about 8.05 min/mile. Speeds work the same way — mph is km/h divided by 1.609344.

Why is the pace shown as a decimal?

This tool shows pace as decimal minutes, not MM:SS. So 5.5 min/km means 5 minutes and 30 seconds per kilometre (0.5 minutes = 30 seconds). Decimals are easier to keep calculating with; for your watch, just convert the fractional part to seconds.
