What is an area converter?
One value, any unit
An area converter changes a measurement of surface from one unit into another — square metres to square feet, acres to hectares, square kilometres to square miles, and back. It works by translating every unit through a single shared base, the square metre, so any pair of units can be converted with one consistent rule. This tool covers ten common units across the metric and imperial systems, making it useful for real estate, land and property, flooring, gardening, construction, and schoolwork — anywhere areas in different systems need to meet.
Each unit has an exact size in square metres. To convert, the value is first turned into square metres, then into the target unit.

Area scales with the square of the length factor: since a foot is 0.3048 m, a square foot is 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m². The same single rule handles every direction, so converting square feet back to square metres just swaps which factor divides.

The converted figure is exact to the precision shown. Metric area units (mm², cm², m², km²) scale in powers of one hundred — each step up the metric ladder is 100× the previous, because area is length squared — while imperial conversions rely on the fixed factors above. For everyday tasks like estimating flooring or paint, round the result to a sensible number of decimals; for surveying or legal documents, keep the full precision. The acre and hectare are common land units: a hectare is 10000 m², while an acre is about 4047 m², so a hectare is roughly 2.47 acres.
The arithmetic is exact; the only limit is display precision.
Rounding and unit choice
Results are rounded to six decimal places, so converting between units that differ enormously in size — square millimetres to square kilometres, for example — can lose the last digits. The converter handles pure area only; it does not convert length or volume, which scale with the first and third power of the length factor rather than the square. For legal, surveying, or precision-manufacturing work, always confirm against the governing standard for your field.
