What is an AP Statistics score calculator?

An AP Statistics score calculator converts the raw points you earned on a practice or released exam into the 1-5 score the College Board would report. AP Statistics is unusual: instead of normalising whole sections, its published scoring worksheet multiplies each raw score by a fixed factor, and the sixth free-response question — the investigative task — carries a heavier multiplier than the other five.
Section I is 40 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes. Section II is six free-response questions in 90 minutes: five standard questions scored 0-4 raw points each, plus the investigative task, also scored 0-4 but weighted as 25 % of Section II.
The published worksheet turns those raw scores into a 100-point composite with three multipliers. Each fully correct section contributes exactly 50 points, which is what makes the two halves of the exam equally weighted.
Composite = (MC × 1.25) + (Q1–Q5 × 1.875) + (Task × 3.125)There is no penalty for a wrong multiple-choice answer, so an unanswered question and a wrong guess are worth exactly the same: nothing.

Score the multiple-choice section
Count your correct answers only — 26 of 40 in this example. Weighted: 26 × 1.25 = 32.5 composite points.
Add up questions 1 to 5
The five standard free-response questions score 3, 3, 2, 2 and 2 points. That is 12 of 20 raw points.
Weight questions 1 to 5
12 × 1.875 = 22.5 composite points.
Weight the investigative task separately
2 × 3.125 = 6.25 composite points. One investigative-task point is worth 1.67 times a point on questions 1-5 — which is why it repays disproportionate practice.
Add the three components
32.5 + 22.5 + 6.25 = 61.25 of 100, which rounds to a composite of 61 and lands in the 55-69 band: an estimated 4.
The 1-5 scale has a fixed meaning. According to the College Board, a 5 is "extremely well qualified", a 4 is "well qualified", a 3 is "qualified" — the level at which many universities grant credit — and a 2 or 1 is below the usual credit threshold.
What the composite adds is the distance to the next band. The worked example lands at 61.25, which is 8.75 points short of a 5. In practical terms that is seven more multiple-choice questions (1.25 points each), five more points across questions 1-5 (1.875 each), or three more investigative-task points (3.125 each) — three concrete routes to the same target rather than a vague "revise more".
Check the credit policy of the universities you are applying to before you set a target. Requirements vary widely: many state universities award credit for a 3, while more selective institutions require a 4 or 5.

The College Board does not publish the conversion table for the current year. The cut scores used here are reverse-engineered from recently released scoring worksheets and move by roughly 2-4 composite points from one administration to the next as exam difficulty changes.
Two further sources of error sit on your side of the calculation. AP Statistics free-response answers are graded holistically: essentially correct, partially correct or incorrect. That makes self-scoring harder than on exams with itemised point lists, and self-scored answers are usually more generous than an official reader would be. Use the result to track progress between practice exams, and do not treat a borderline composite as a guaranteed band.
