What this number means

P = V × I needs no constant

It follows from the SI definitions of the volt and the ampere, so there is nothing here to look up. Ten amps at 230 volts is 2300 watts, sixteen amps 3680 watts.

Alternating current is not direct current

The product is the real power only while current and voltage stay in step, as they do in heaters, kettles and filament lamps. Motors, transformers and switching supplies need the power factor as a third term: P = V × I × PF.

Without the power factor this is apparent power

A motor drawing the same 10 A at 230 V can convert closer to 1900 W than the 2300 W this calculator prints. The gap is the power factor, and this calculator has no field for it.

Commonly misread

A motor on 10 A at 230 V converts 2300 W.

That is the apparent power. The real power is P = V × I × PF and lands lower — nearer 1900 W in this example.

Watts depend on the current alone.

The same 10 A carries 120 W at 12 V and 2300 W at 230 V. Without the voltage the wattage is not determined.

A kettle needs the power factor too.

Current and voltage stay in step in a purely resistive load, so P = V × I already is the real power.
